dotPhoto Pros: How does tax reporting work for photos I sell?

Modified on Tue, 15 Nov, 2016 at 6:53 PM

The IRS requires that dotPhoto report payment information.  As such, you must either (1) accept payments via PayPal, which handles reporting, or (2) enter your social security number or your company's federal tax ID number in the payment section of the My Account tab in order to be paid.

If you earn more than $600 in a calendar year (less electronic payments by PayPal), you will receive a 1099 form from dotPhoto at the beginning of the next calendar year.

Electronic payments through PayPal are not included in dotPhoto 1099 reporting

dotPhoto pays pros by PayPal, which ensures reliable, quick payments without losing checks. PayPal reports payments directly to the government, so any amount paid to PayPal is deducted from your total 1099 reporting. For example, if you earned $1000 for the year and were paid half of that ($500) by PayPal, then your $500 non-PayPal earnings at dotPhoto would fall under the $600 annual 1099 threshold, and you would not receive a 1099 from dotPhoto for 2015.
